Affordable gigabit internet is possible
Bifrost communications was founded in 2015 at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU). The company have developed a unique patented technology that makes not only large cost savings but also significant efficiency improvements possible for operators globally. It is the only solution that enables operators worldwide to provide effective gigabit fiber-optic internet connections at reasonable costs and with low power consumption. The invention was made by its founders, Jesper Bevensee Jensen while at DTU and Bo Pedersen.
In 2014 Bo, already an experienced entrepreneur with 30 years of industrial experience, was introduced to Jesper at DTU by their common acquaintance Jes Broeng, professor at DTU’s department for Photonics Engineering, DTU Fotonik. Back then Jesper was colleague to Jes and an assistant professor at DTU Fotonik. Jes became the third founder of Bifrost Communications.
Professor left DTU to focus on Bifrost’s business
Jesper left to DTU devote all his professional knowledge and energy to develop Bifrost Communications together with Bo. The three founders drew on their connections and Jesper together with Bo already in 2015 succeeded in getting a unique strong team onboard for Bifrost’s fast development into a company discussing standards with the world’s leading telecommunication companies, equipment vendors and standardisations bodies.
The need for more funding, preferably intelligent money, was rewarded during the next couple of years and made the company capable expanding the staff and developing their product, a tiny piece of hardware – a signal processing chip – which, together with a license to use the Bifrost technology, would enable industrial customers to manufacture a new form of optic transceivers that really could improve the existing fiber optic technology dramatically.

And not the least, the team early succeded in entering into dialogues with potential customers and the parties interested in, and able to influence the market and standards for advanced fiber optic components. And so today, Bifrost Communications is already a well-established company.
Bifrost wins Danish Tech Challenge
In January 2017 Bifrost was declared winner of Danish Tech Challenge 2016, the most intensive accelerator programme for ambitious hardware start-ups in Denmark and run each year by DTU in collaboration with the Danish Industry Foundation.
Bifrost joins the Broadband Forum
In October 2017 at the Broadband World Forum in Berlin, Bifrost Communications was amongst the members when the Broadband Forum officially launched a press release stating that the NG-PON2 multichannel optical network standard can be the key for long-term success. There were only two company in this press release that were not already a multibillion dollar company, one of them being Bifrost Communications.
The NG-PON2 standard is defined to make it possible for equipment vendors to develop a technology that supports utilizing today’s highly inefficient conventional optical networks much better. While other vendors struggles to meet the classes of the new standard, Bifrost’s patented technology is the only solution today that cost-effectively can meet the link budget of even the toughest NG-PON2 class (E2). Hence, Bifrost’s technology has gained high interest from the NG-PON2 community.
DTU one of the first investors
Bifrost have access to the invention that is the foundation of the company through a license agreement with DTU and DTU have obtained ownership in the company in return. Bifrost’s IP portfolio has since been augmented by three additional inventions that are either implementation methods or are addressing new products to be pursued in the future. The company is conducting R&D to prove and strengthen the technology.
Bifrost is funded by a double-digit number of private investors, and with additional rewards and soft funding from both private funds, Danish governmental and EU funds. The private investors are also contributing to the company with their expertise, which includes technical expertise (optical communication expertise, electrical circuit design and product development) and expertise in supply chain management, operations, finance, sales and fundraising.

Bifrost (pronounced roughly “BEEF-roast;” Old Norse Bifröst) is the rainbow bridge that connects Asgard, the world of the Aesir tribe of gods, with Midgard, the world of humanity. Bifrost is guarded by the ever-vigilant god Heimdall. During Ragnarok, the giants breach Heimdall’s defenses and cross the bridge to storm Asgard and slay the gods.
For communication purposes we are inspired by the Nordic mythology, if you like in the same manner as when naming Bluetooth. The name “Bluetooth” is an Anglicised version of the Scandinavian Blåtand/Blåtann,the epithet of the tenth-century Danish king Harald Bluetooth who united dissonant Danish tribes into a single kingdom.
