Collaboration targets what Bifrost believes will be the industry’s first 50G DWDM SFP56 Quasi-Coherent
pluggable transceiver, combining extended reach, low latency, and full C-Band coverage in a compact, DSPfree form factor.

Malaga, Spain – September 18, 2026, Bifrost Communications, a pioneer in Quasi-Coherent optical
transmission technology, today announced a strategic collaboration with Sumitomo Electric Device
Innovation to integrate their advanced semi-tunable laser technology into Bifrost’s innovative 50G QuasiCoherent (QC) optical transceiver platform.
The collaboration is focused on developing what Bifrost Communications believes will be the industry’s first
and only 50G DWDM SFP56 Quasi-Coherent pluggable transceiver, delivering a unique combination of
extended reach, low latency, reduced power consumption, and high-density deployment in a compact SFP56
form factor.
By leveraging Sumitomo Electric’s semi-tunable laser architecture, the new platform will enable full C-Band
coverage through only five stock-keeping units (SKUs), significantly simplifying inventory management and
network operations compared to traditional DWDM solutions. The integrated solution preserves the lowpower, DSP-free architecture that differentiates Bifrost’s Quasi-Coherent technology while adding
unprecedented deployment flexibility.

Key Technology Advantages

  • Industry’s first 50G DWDM SFP56 Quasi-Coherent transceiver
  • Full C-Band coverage with only five SKUs
  • DSP-free architecture reducing power consumption and latency
  • Enhanced chromatic dispersion tolerance and extended optical reach
  • Compact SFP56 form factor optimized for high-density platforms
  • Low latency operation for mobile fronthaul, video broadcasting applications, and distributed AI
    infrastructure
  • Simplified DWDM network deployment and inventory management
    Ideal for mobile

Advancing 50G Optical Connectivity

Bifrost’s patented Quasi-Coherent technology was developed to bridge the gap between conventional IMDD optics and traditional coherent transmission systems. While coherent solutions rely on power-intensive
digital signal processors (DSPs), Bifrost’s approach achieves superior chromatic dispersion tolerance,
extended reach, and DWDM compatibility without the complexity, latency, or power consumption associated
with DSP-based architectures.

The addition of Sumitomo Electric Device Innovation’ semi-tunable laser technology further enhances this
value proposition by bringing wavelength flexibility traditionally associated with coherent systems into a
compact, low-power, DSP-free platform.

Together, the technologies create a new category of pluggable optical solutions designed to address growing
bandwidth demands across mobile transport, edge networks, access infrastructure, and emerging AI-driven
architectures.

Executive Statement

“The integration of Sumitomo Electric’s semi-tunable laser technology into our Quasi-Coherent platform
represents a significant milestone in the evolution of compact DWDM optics,” said Bo Pedersen, CEO of
Bifrost Communications. “By combining wavelength flexibility with our DSP-free Quasi-Coherent
architecture, we are enabling network operators to deploy high-performance 50G DWDM connectivity with
dramatically lower power consumption, simplified operations, and the compact form factor required for
next-generation transport and fronthaul networks.”

“This collaboration highlights how innovation in laser technology and optical transmission architectures can
come together to address critical scaling challenges facing modern networks,” said James Kannan, Leader of
Metro/Access Segment at Sumitomo Electric Device Innovation. “We believe semi-tunable DWDM solutions
have the potential to transform how operators deploy and manage high-capacity infrastructure as demand
continues to grow across edge, transport, and AI-driven applications.”

Looking Ahead

The companies expect the technology to support a broad range of DWDM applications, including:

  • Mobile fronthaul and open RAN networks
  • Edge and metro aggregation
  • Distributed AI infrastructure and interconnects
  • Access and transport networks
  • Video contribution, distribution, and broadcasting

Bifrost Communications plans to continue expanding its Quasi-Coherent portfolio with higher-capacity DSPfree pluggable solutions, maintaining its focus on operational simplicity, energy efficiency, and dense
deployment architectures for next-generation optical networks.

Unlike fully coherent solutions, which rely on powerhungry DSP architectures, Bifrost’s QC platform delivers enhanced chromatic dispersion tolerance, extended reach, and DWDM compatibility while maintaining low latency, reduced power profile, and compact dimensions required for mobile fronthaul, edge and access applications.

The integration of semi-tunable laser technology further strengthens this proposition by introducing
operational flexibility traditionally associated with coherent platforms, without compromising the intrinsic advantages of the DSP-free QC architecture.

Executive Statement

“Bifrost Quasi-Coherent technology is ideally suited to demanding application such as SMPTE ST 2110 media transport infrastructure. Our ultra-low latency and low power & high reliability combined with long reach of up to 40km provides a cost-effective alternative for Media companies wishing to build cost effective Media Transport networks over fiber” said Bo Pedersen, CEO of Bifrost Communications. “We believe the combination of tunability, low power consumption, and DSP-free operation in an SFP28 form factor creates a highly differentiated proposition for next-generation SMPTE ST 2110 transport networks.”

“Our collaboration with next-generation optical technology providers such as Bifrost Communications provides benefits to Gravity Media and to the media industry in general as we work together to solve critical network scaling challenges,” said Nick Symes, Director – Technology at Gravity Media UK. “We see strong potential for compact semi-tunable DWDM solutions supporting the evolution toward higher-capacity Media edge and transport infrastructure.”

Future Outlook

The companies expect the technology to support a broad range of future SMPTE ST 2110 Media Industry applications including:

  • Cost effective SMPTE ST 2110 Transport via public Spectrum Services
  • SMPTE ST 2110 Transport for outside broadcast, sporting events and stadium networks.
  • Future High-resolution video broadcasting platform extension.

Bifrost Communications will continue expanding its Quasi-Coherent product portfolio toward higher-capacity DSP-free pluggable solutions while maintaining the operational simplicity and energy efficiency advantages of SFP-class architectures.
